Teacher Induction Program

AUSD provides an excellent Teacher Induction Program as a pathway for teachers to improve their teaching and clear their teaching credentials. Our program partners with the Contra Costa County Office of Education, New Teacher Center (NTC), St. Mary’s College, and the Contra Costa County Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) to provide professional development for new teachers as they transition from pre-service to credentialed teaching.

Using the research-based best practices model of the NTC, beginning teachers in AUSD receive at least an hour of differentiated support each week from experienced mentor teachers, develop and reflect on individual goals for improving their teaching, and participate in formative assessment of their progress towards those goals in many ways throughout the year, including lesson planning, student work analysis, informal and formal observations by their mentor, developing and completing a self-study inquiry action plan, and reflecting on their classroom practices.

Teacher Induction helps teachers:

  • Increase student learning
  • Make sound instructional decisions
  • Engage in long term planning
  • Reflect on their practice through cycles of inquiry
  • Collaborate with colleagues
  • Develop as a professional educator
  • Stay in the teaching profession
