June 26 Family Letter about Instructional Programs

June 26, 2020

Dear AUSD Families,

At its June 23 public meeting, the Board of Education voted to approve an instructional program for the 2020-21 school year. That program will be comprised of two options:

  • A Flexible Program in which students will attend school in either the morning or afternoon four times a week
  • A Remote Program for those families whose students are eligible to learn entirely online next year. We will try to accept as many students as we can in this program, but we will give priority to students who have, live with, or are cared for by people with underlying medical conditions that put them especially at risk for complications from COVID-19.

More information about these schedules is available in our June 24 press release and in our FAQs, all of which are available on our Planning for 2020-21 web page.

In order to plan for instruction, health and safety protocols, and student support systems, we need to know which option families prefer for their students. We especially need to know how many students want to be in the Remote Learning Program. As such, we are asking all families to complete an Instructional Program Choice for 2020-21 form, which will go live on June 29 at 8:00 am on the Planning for 2020-21 web page.

Please take the following steps to select the program you prefer for your students:

1. Fill out an Instructional Program Choice form for each student by July 5 at 11:59 pm.

2. Students who have an underlying medical condition that make them vulnerable to COVID-19 -- or who live with a person or have a caretaker with such a condition -- will be prioritized for the Remote Learning Program.

3. Notifications about students' status in the Remote Learning Program will be sent to families on July 9 and July 10.

4. We will continue to update the FAQs about both the Remote Learning and Flexible Learning programs as we consult with health officials and make final decisions.

5. We will hold a community meeting about the Remote Learning Program on July 14 so that we can provide you with more information and answer your questions. (We will send details about that meeting next week.)

6. Families who select the Remote Learning Program between June 29 and July 5 will then have until July 19 to make their final decision about that program. If they still want their student to be in the remote program, they will need to fill out and submit a confirmation form by July 19 to complete the selection process.

Please note that once a student is accepted into the Remote Learning Program and the family confirms that acceptance, the student will be required to stay in the program for the entire 2020-2021 school year. Your student will be able to return to his/her/NB current school in the 2021-2022 school year if schools are open for in-person instruction at that time.

We will be sending reminders via text, email, and robocall over the next week to remind you to complete the Instructional Program Choice for 2020-21 form. If you have further questions about selecting these programs, please contact our Student Services Department.   Please remember, too, that you can find more information about the programs, as well as the actual Instructional Program Choice form, on our Planning for 2020-21 web page.

Thank you,

The Student Services Team
