Background Information on the New Immunization Requirements

On June 30, 2015, Governor Brown signed Senate Bill 277 (SB 277), which changes school immunization requirements. Under the new legislation, as of January 1, 2016, personal belief exemptions will no longer be accepted for the state's required immunizations. Immunization Requirements by Grade Level


Immunization Requirements for TK and Kindergarten Pre-Enrollment

The California Department of Public Health determines the immunization requirements for school entry. Per California Health and Safety Code, Sections 120325-120375, the requirements for pre-enrollment into AUSD for Transitional Kindergarten or Kindergarten are listed below and in this printable document.

 

Make sure that your child is on track to complete immunization requirements. Children behind on their required immunizations will not be permitted to enroll into an AUSD school without documentation from a physician stating that 1) they are not currently due for any doses (due to being on an alternative immunization schedule), or 2) they have a valid medical exemption. Please see the Instant Childhood Immunization Schedule on the CDC website for a list of recommended dates for immunizations based on your child's birth date.

 

If your child receives any additional vaccinations between their date of enrollment into AUSD and the first day of the 2016-2017 school year, you must bring the updated immunization records into your school office sometime during the two week period prior to the first day of school. Remember, children who have not provided AUSD with documentation verifying they have received all required immunizations prior to the first day of school (August 31, 2016) will not be allowed to attend school until all immunization records have been provided.

Vaccine is not required for students with documentation from a physician verifying history of varicella (chickenpox) disease or immunity.

Additional Health Requirements for Students in Grades K-1


Attention K-1 Parents & Families:

 

In recognition of the importance of a child's health to their success in school, California law requires all students to provide proof of health examination or a signed waiver before admission into kindergarten or first grade. The health examination consists of a physical examination and an oral health assessment. 

 

All children entering the first grade must receive a physical examination any time between 18 months before first grade entry through 90 days after entry into first grade. The completed “Report of Health Examination” or a signed waiver must be presented to the school within 90 days of the start of the first grade year. 

For students enrolling into kindergarten for the 2016-2017 school year, the exam must be obtained on or after March 1, 2016, or during the kindergarten year. By state law, the form must be submitted to your school office prior to the end of the 2016-2017 school year.

Medical Exam Waiver - review and return to school

 

All students entering kindergarten must receive an oral health assessment by May 31 of their kindergarten year. The exam can be obtained up to 12 months prior to the start of kindergarten (i.e., no earlier than September 2015), or any time during the kindergarten year. By state law, the exam must be completed and the form submitted to your school office prior to the end of the 2016-2017 school year.
