About AUSD's Board of Education

A five-member Board of Education oversees the Alameda Unified School District. Members are elected at-large and serve four-year terms.

 

The Board acts in the best interests of all students, reviews and approves the budget, authorizes expenditures, employs the Superintendent, and adopts a vision, mission, guiding principles, and policies within the limits of the State Education Code. Board members are accessible to the community and integrate public input into their deliberations and decision-making.

  1. All students have the ability to achieve academic and personal success.
  2. Teachers must challenge and support all students to reach their highest academic and personal potential.
  3. Administrators must have the knowledge, leadership skills, and ability to ensure all students succeed.
  4. Parental involvement and community engagement are integral to the success of all students.
  5. Accountability, transparency, and trust are necessary at all levels of the organization.
  6. Allocation of funds must support our vision, mission, and guiding principles.
  7. All employees must receive respectful treatment and professional support to achieve district goals.

The California School Boards Association (CSBA) maintains Alameda Unified School District policies. Besides maintaining our policies, CSBA provides legal updates to ensure our policies are legally compliant and up to date.

Student Board Members

The Board also includes a Student Board Member from Alameda High School, Encinal High School, Island High School, and the Alameda Science & Technology Institute (ASTI).

The duties of the Student Board Members include:
  • Providing continuing input for Board deliberations
  • Strengthening communications between the Board and District students
  • Representing all students and facilitating the discussion of all sides of issues
Student Board Members may cast preferential votes prior to the official Board vote.

Meeting Information

The Board of Education holds regular meetings the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM. Please note – there is only one meeting in December and no regularly scheduled meetings in July. Please click here for the schedule of meetings for 2017.

 

All meetings, unless posted otherwise, are held at the City of Alameda Council Chambers located on the 3rd floor of City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.
 
Meeting agendas are posted the Wednesday prior to the regular Board meeting at the following locations:
  • Window of main entrance of the District Office, 2060 Challenger Drive
  • District website (Agendas & Minutes page)
Copies of the agenda and backup materials are made available to the public. Any related agenda items that are distributed to at least a majority of Board Members less than 72 hours before a noticed meeting (and that are public records not otherwise exempt from disclosure) will be available for inspection at the District Office – 2060 Challenger Drive. Such writings may also be available on the District’s website.
